TYPES OF WATER DAMAGE WE CLEAN UP
Water damage can occur from a huge variety or sources. Some of the most common causes of water damage we see at Perris Water Damage are:
- Dishwasher and washing machine malfunctions
- Leaking or burst pipes
- Toilet overflows
- Clogged gutters
- Fire sprinkler discharge
Even in cases where the water damage has the same cause, each case of water damage is very different. For example, a dishwasher overflow might only cause mild damage on a linoleum floor but could be disastrous on a wood floor. For these reasons, water damage isn’t measured by its cause. It is labeled by Category and Class.
WATER DAMAGE CLASSES
Water damage can be put into 4 classes depending on how fast evaporation takes place. If there is a huge amount of water in your home, then there will be a lot of evaporation taking place and a higher class. The type of material will also affect the evaporation rate. For example, porous surfaces like mattresses are very absorbent, so they will absorb more water and have a higher evaporation rate than a hard surface like linoleum.
Class 1: This class of water damage is the easiest to clean up. It refers to situations in which little water is present, and there are no carpets or padding in the room. Water has not wicked up the walls.
Class 2: In these cases, there is significant water damage which has affected walls, but has not wicked up more than 2 feet. The room contains carpeting and padding, and the water has absorbed into the room’s foundational structures.
Class 3: Water has wicked up walls above 2 feet and virtually all surfaces have become saturated with water. Class 3 water damage often occurs from overhead sources, such as fire sprinkler malfunctions.
Class 4: Class 4 water damage is reserved for specialty situations in which standard drying methods cannot reach the air. The most common example of this is with water damage on wood floors. Air movers (which are industry-grade fans) are ineffective for drying wood floors because the water becomes trapped in the grain. Specialty equipment must be used.
WATER DAMAGE CATEGORIES
There are 3 categories of water damage. The category refers to how clean and safe the water is. This is very important because dirty water can contain viruses, bacteria, toxins, and many other harmful agents. You should never try to clean up dirty water yourself!
Category 1:Water damage from this category consists of water from a clean source, such as a burst supply line pipe. This is the easiest category of water damage to clean up. If the water damage is not extensive, you can start cleaning it up yourself.
Category 2:Category 2 water damage contains or may contain health risks, such as bacteria and mold. Keep in mind that sometimes these contaminants can get into the air (such as with mold spores) so even breathing the air around the site of the water damage can be dangerous. Always play it safe and have a professional clean up category 2 water damage. If you must enter an area with Category 2 water damage, then you should wear protective gear like boots, gloves, and a respirator.
Category 3: Known as Black Water, Category 3 is the worst category of water damage. It refers to water which poses a health risk, such as sewage water or water which has been left to stand for a prolonged period of time. We encourage you to get all water damage cleaned up ASAP because Category 1 and 2 water can quickly turn into Category 3 if mold and bacteria are allowed to fester.
CATEGORY 3 WATER DAMAGE CLEANUP
One of the most common causes of Category 3 water damage cleanup we see is from sewer main backups. Usually the sewage water backs up into the basement, but it often may come out of a downstairs toilet, shower, or sink.
Please understand that Category 3 water damage is grossly unsanitary. You should never attempt to clean up this mess yourself. Even breathing in the air around Category 3 water damage can be hazardous to your health. We make sure our technicians stay safe by providing them with HEPA respirators, waders, full body suits, gloves, and even goggles for some cases.
As holders of a Sewage Remediation Advanced Training certificate from the Academy of Textiles and Flooring, we are prepared to clean up black water. The process is done methodically to make sure no traces of contaminants remain and all surfaces are sanitized. Any soft or porous substances which were affected by sewage will need to be disposed of (drywall, mattresses, bedding, carpeting, etc.). However, we are able to save hard surfaces such as wood floors by sanitizing them and sealing them over. It is often possible to save valuable rugs from the effects of sewage damage by sending them to a specialty cleaning facility. As always, our goal at Perris Water Damage is to save as much of your property as possible while keeping the restoration process fast and stress-free.
